Best Organic & Non-toxic Mattresses in Australia

Your mattress is where you spend the most of your day (or night). It stands to reason that you would want one that was produced without chemicals and with consideration for the environment. You don’t want to spend eight hours resting on a rough, chemical-covered mattress, after all!

Naturally, buying an organic, non-toxic Australian mattress would be the answer. Unfortunately, it’s simpler said than done. It might be challenging to determine whether companies are credible in their organic claims when there are so many making bogus claims about environmental friendliness or healthful, naturally-sourced ingredients.

We set out to showcase some of the top organic and non-toxic mattresses that are offered in Australia for this reason. The BedTimeBuzz team examined 11 certified organic mattresses to determine our best selections, rating them based on in-person testing and our in-house analysis to get an easy-to-understand score. These mattresses have all received official certification from one or more independent organizations, such as GOTS, CertiPUR-US, etc.

Organic & Non-toxic Mattress: Brief Factors to Consider

Your Preferences

Whether an organic mattress meets your preferences is the first and most important thing to consider. There’s no use in purchasing a softer mattress just because it’s organic if you want a firmer mattress. Those who are aware of their tendency to sleep hot can seek for an organic mattress with cooling qualities. Finding a mattress that checks off all your other mattress requirements is much simpler if you are aware of what you need from one.

Composition of Materials

When looking for an organic mattress, latex mattresses are frequently regarded as the standard option. Unlike other mattress materials like memory foam, latex is a sustainable substance harvested from rubber plants.

Other mattress kinds, like innerspring, hybrid, and memory foam, are not organic. However, if they forgo the use of specific chemicals like PBDE flame retardant or formaldehyde and are accredited by a trustworthy organization, they can still be declared non-toxic.

Company Values

It’s important to look into a company’s environmental, consumer health, and sustainability values before delving into the specifics of its mattress product. Some businesses go above and beyond mattress sales by committing themselves to environmental charities and causes. This could help you make a more informed decision about your purchase and perhaps favor one firm over another. As an illustration, the company Koala is a registered B-Corp, which means that it adheres to the strictest social and environmental standards and donates one percent of its net sales to the improvement of the environment.

One of the main reasons you or anyone else might be looking for a reliable organic mattress is allergies. Make sure any organic mattress you buy does not cause any allergies, whether it be to dust, harsh chemicals (like the isocyanate found in foam mattresses), or even the internal filling (1% of people are allergic to latex, for example). Even if you are not aware of any allergies, you may wish to choose a hypoallergenic mattress out of caution; after all, allergies can appear at any time.

Certifications are your go-to indicator for the truth of any claims that a mattress is chemical-free or environmentally friendly while you are mattress shopping. Many organizations, including eco-INSTITUT, CertiPUR-US, GECA, OEKO-TEX, and others, focus on vetting the claims made by furniture manufacturers in Australia and elsewhere. They put manufacturers’ assertions to the test, and if their goods live up to their claims about sustainability, safety, or the environment, they boldly stamp their “seal of approval” on them.

If a mattress makes uncertified claims about being organic, non-toxic, or eco-friendly, be extremely wary of it.

Source of Origin

Another factor that could lead someone to choose an eco-friendly mattress is the impact—or lack thereof—on the environment. A mattress made solely in Australia will require a lot less logistical rearranging and shipping than a mattress made in another country using components from all over the world. Thus, the product’s environmental impact will be reduced.

Non-Toxic Mattresses Recommendations (2023)

It’s time to move on to the particular product reviews now that you have a better understanding of why you might want a chemical-free, organic, eco-friendly mattress and how to spot one.

Peacelily Latex Mattress – Best Organic

A TRUE organic mattress is Peacelily. The Peacelily latex mattress is made with a three-layered Dunlop latex core that is 100% natural, eco-INSTITUTE/OEKO-TEX Class 1 certified, and further covered in GOLS certified cotton wadding and cover.

The mattress’s ability to be turned over to reveal a firm side (7/10) and a medium side (5/10) makes it special. According to your preferences, you can pick the side of the bed where you want to sleep. While back, stomach, and heavier people may prefer the firmer side, side sleepers or lighter people may prefer the medium side.

In both positions, the mattress strikes a decent mix between support and softness. The mattress is sensitive, which is unusual for latex mattresses, and you tend to sleep more on top of it than “in” it. You get a good amount of pressure relief without sinking too far into the mattress, and there is plenty of support.

The latex and cotton in the mattress have inherent anti-allergenic and dust-mite characteristics. Additionally, the mattress sleeps temperature-neutral, provides good edge support, and performs well in terms of motion isolation.

The mattress is available in all regular sizes and is 8.6 inches (22 cm) thick. The mattress is supplied compressed in a box, and delivery is free within Australia’s continental region.

In addition to being entirely organic, we believe that the Peacelily latex mattress is a great choice for anyone seeking a firm mattress that is long-lasting and provides outstanding value for money.

What Sets the Peacelily Mattress Apart?

  • It is very reasonably priced for a latex mattress with all the brand certifications.
  • It has a medium and firm side and is a dual-sided flippable mattress, making it suitable for a variety of sleepers and sleeping positions.
  • You get 120 nights to test it out to determine if it’s the ideal mattress; it arrives in a box at your doorstep for free.
  • Because of its exceptional durability, it is a fantastic long-term investment. It is supported by an industry-leading 25-year warranty.

  • The mattress may be a touch too firm in both configurations for people looking for a soft or plush mattress.
  • Making the bed is difficult because of the hefty mattress.

The New Koala Mattress – Best Balanced Comfort

Each and every Koala mattress has received the GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) certification, one of the strictest environmental requirements in both Australia and the entire globe. You may be confident that their products are manufactured sustainably and with your health as a top priority.

A 3″ comfort layer and a 7″ support base are features of the New Koala mattress, an all-foam adjustable firmness mattress. You can pick between firm (7) or medium-firm (6) support thanks to the top comfort layer’s flippable design. There is a 3-zone support foam base underneath the comfort layer. For your head, shoulders, and hips, the foundation layer offers varied degrees of support.

A contented middle ground between responsiveness and sinkage is provided by the Koala mattress. You feel some minor contouring and more pressure alleviation from the memory foam, but nothing significant. The mattress is sensitive enough, though, to prevent you from sinking too far.

The medium side of the Koala mattress, according to our testers, is a little softer than the medium side of the Peacelily Mattress (our top pick). For side sleepers or those looking for greater comfort, the medium side can be a good choice. For the back, stomach, and larger people (weighing less than 100 kg), the hard side would be perfect. The mattress had a balanced sleeping temperature and provided decent motion isolation.

The mattress comes in all common sizes and is 10′′ thick. You get 120 nights to test the mattress out, and shipping is free throughout Australia. A free return pickup is also provided.

What Sets Apart the New Koala Mattress?

  • The mattress combines a responsive sensation with a pillow top feel.
  • It is suitable for a variety of sleepers due to its average qualities.
  • One mattress with two different firmness levels.
  • provides effective support and encourages a healthy spine alignment.
  • The mattress provides good value for the price.
  • A 120-night trial period and a 10-year warranty are included with the mattress.

  • It takes some effort to flip the comfort layer and install it.
  • The Koala mattress may not provide the essential support for people who weigh more above 100 kg.
  • If you want a soft, velvety mattress, you might have to go elsewhere.

Emma Comfort Mattress – Best Budget (Non-Toxic)

Emma mattress is neither entirely natural nor environmentally friendly because it is manufactured from chemical ingredients, just like any other foam mattress. But because it was made from top-notch components, the Emma mattress is as non-toxic and vegan as it comes. Additionally, the mattress is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified. In order to find a wide range of potentially dangerous substances—both legal and illegal—OEKO-TEX conducts stringent tests on products. You can rest easy knowing that your mattress is safe for both you and the environment and is devoid of dangerous chemicals.

One of their more reasonably priced models, the Emma Comfort, offers good value for the money. The mattress comes in all common sizes and is 10′′ thick. It is a simple two-layer, all-foam mattress with a 3″ comfort layer and 7″ zones support structure. The zoned design makes the hip area of the mattress significantly firmer than the rest of it, encouraging proper alignment.

Although the manufacturer describes the mattress as medium-firm (6/10), our testers found it to be slightly firmer than medium – about 7/10. The mattress feels more supportive and has a neutral foam feel. The design should be advantageous for stomach, back, and average-weight sleepers. The mattress can be a little bit too hard for heavier people or small side sleepers.

The mattress didn’t seem to retain a lot of heat, and we felt that it slept reasonably cold. While the edge support was only average (as is typical for foam mattresses), the mattress performed well in the motion isolation department.

What Sets Emma Apart?

  • The mattress’ moderate firmness makes it an excellent choice for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers of average weight should also feel the appropriate pressure alleviation.
  • It is simple to switch positions without feeling stuck because to the sensitive surface.
  • The mattress is one of Australia’s most reasonably priced non-toxic mattresses.

  • If you’re looking for a soft or luxurious bed, this mattress might not be the best choice.
  • In comparison to other online mattress brands, the shipping and customer service are delayed.

Quokkabeds Latex Mattress – Most Customisable

Quokkabeds Latex Mattress

The most distinctive product on the list is the all-latex Quokkabeds mattress. The mattress’ individual Dunlop latex layers can be adjusted to create medium, firm, or extra firm options. For couples with varied sleeping tastes, there is also the option of divided firmness; one side can be hard and the other can be medium. There are two mattress thickness options: 16 cm and 24 cm. The 24-cm variant features three layers, compared to the 16-cm model’s two. As you can see, there is no comparison for the extent of customization.

The mattress offers the traditional latex sensation, which is springy and bouncy with reliable support. The 7-zone support system, which consists of varying degrees of pincore holes or perforations in the latex, is another distinctive aspect of the mattress. This is meant to relieve strain and offer focused assistance. But none of the 7 zones felt particularly different to our testers; rather, they were all fairly similar.

The 24-cm option might be better suitable for side sleepers or those searching for a more plush mattress, whereas the 16-cm version is a decent alternative for back and stomach sleepers. We believe the mattress would accommodate most sorts of sleepers well because of the various layers and thicknesses.

The mattress is eco-INSTITUT and OEKO-TEX certified, just as our top selection Peacelily. The mattress comes with a 20-year warranty and is offered in all regular sizes. It does not, however, include a risk-free trial. Instead, if you’re unhappy with the mattress’ firmness, the company will exchange the latex layer for you once at no cost.

Although the Quokkabeds latex mattress is on the more expensive side, we believe it is reasonably priced given the level of customization, all-latex construction, and 20-year warranty.

What Makes Quokkabeds Stand Out?

  • Amazing degree of customization—you may pick the firmness, thickness, and support of the mattress.
  • Targeted support and pressure relief are provided by the layers of perforated latex.
  • The latex is perforated with tiny holes to increase airflow and prevent heat buildup.

  • It takes a lot of work to switch the layers, especially in the 24-cm version. The layers would need to be properly arranged, which might need two people.
  • There is no risk-free trial.

Pure Comfort Latex Mattress – Best Luxury (All Organic)

Pure Comfort Latex Mattress

Disclaimer: At the showroom in Springwood, QLD, a member of our staff briefly evaluated the Pure comfort latex mattress. Although we would have preferred to conduct a more in-depth review, the cost of the mattress prevented us from doing so. Therefore, take this review with a grain of salt.

The Pure Comfort latex mattress is a luxury option if you’re seeking for an all-organic mattress and are willing to pay a premium for it. Although it is one of the priciest mattresses on the list, it is made by Australia’s oldest and most reputable latex manufacturer. Not to mention that the mattress is handcrafted in Australia to the highest levels of quality assurance.

From its Tencel cover made of Eucalyptus pulp fiber, which starts at $4,557, to the fully reversible three-layered latex filling, which is, of course, 100% natural and produced in sustainable plantations without the use of any hazardous chemicals, everything about this product’s design screams luxury.

Three latex layers make up the mattress, and you can rearrange them anyway you choose for comfort. Between two 5 cm soft or firm latex layers is a 15 cm thick medium or firm latex layer that makes up the central core.

Despite being made of latex, the soft configuration provided a good deal of sinkage and contouring comfort. The firm configuration was extremely dense and supporting, making it ideal for stomach sleepers and some types of back sleepers, while the medium configuration felt like a nice compromise between support and comfort. We believe that the mattress would accommodate most sleeping positions and sleeper types well because of the changeable firmness settings.

All three latex layers are hypoallergenic and asthma-friendly, with zones specifically designed to support each body part (head and neck, shoulder and upper back, lumbar, pelvis, knees, lower legs, foot and ankle). The exterior Tencel cover is made from a biodegradable material that is also permeable, antibacterial, and naturally moisture-wicking.

The Pure Comfort Latex Mattress doesn’t fall short when it comes to certification. It is chemical-free and VOC-free because it has the Eco-INSTITUT certification. The Tencel cover comes with the same guarantee of no chemicals as the latex in this mattress because its materials are OEKO TEX certified. Additionally, even though it has nothing to do with environmental responsibility or safety, this product’s latex has obtained the LGA Quality Certificate, emphasizing its tenacity and capacity to continue functioning even after extensive testing.

The mattress has a 21-year warranty, however there is no sleep trial option.

What Sets the Pure Latex Mattress Apart?

  • Natural latex filling of the highest caliber and opulent styling.
  • The mattress’ stiffness can be changed by moving particular layers around.
  • The majority of sleepers should find the mattress to be a wonderful fit.

  • One of the priciest mattresses on the list is this one.
  • There isn’t a risk-free trial offered.

Koala Calm As Mattress – Best for Heavier Bodies

Koala Calm As Mattress

The second mattress from the Koala to appear on our list is the Koala Calm As Mattress. In terms of changeable firmness or environmental certifications, it is very similar to the New Koala mattress. The mattress’ 5-layer design and larger density foams, which are what set it apart, make it more suited for heavier persons. Additionally, the mattress is more supportive and generally quite firm. The medium side is stiffer than the soft side, which is about (7/10), and the hard side is roughly 8/10.

The mattress is built with five layers of foam: a quilted cover (1 cm), a comfort layer (7 cm), and three zones that provide tailored lumbar support. The zoning of support layers relieves pressure spots, encourages a healthier spine alignment, and might aid with back pain relief.

Taking a Nap on the Koala Calm On the firm side of the mattress, there was neither much nor little sinkage. When lying on the mattress, the zoned construction was noticeable and the mattress felt very supportive. For heavy side sleepers as well as back and stomach sleepers, we believe the mattress would be an excellent fit.

Although not as good as hybrid or innerspring mattresses, the edge support was respectable and superior to the majority of all-foam beds. The mattress did a superb job of isolating motion transmission due to its all-foam composition.

The mattress has a 120-night risk-free trial period, and standard sizes are covered by a 10-year warranty.

Koala Calm As Mattress’s Unique Qualities

  • Since it has a firm feel, it is suitable for heavier side sleepers as well as back and stomach sleepers.
  • The mattress is excellent for heavier persons because it is sturdy, supportive, and well-built.
  • The mattress is built in zones to provide specialized support.

  • It can be challenging to flip the top comfort layer, and two people may be needed.
  • For those seeking a softer sensation, the mattress may not be ideal.

With greater knowledge, Australians are gradually moving toward organic, eco-friendly, and non-toxic mattresses, and manufacturers are responding by offering alternatives to fill the void. However, despite being more expensive than conventional mattresses, organic mattresses are definitely worth the extra cost. We do, after all, sleep and breathe on mattresses for a third of our lives.

Although there are many more options, we looked at what we believe to be the top organic and non-toxic mattresses currently offered in Australia. Please get in touch with us if there are any mattresses we missed or if there is a specific mattress you would want us to review.
